Q&A With Toronto’s Hufflepuff Wrocker

Our pick for Band of the Month this past June was Oliver Boyd & the Rememberalls. Singer songwriter Christian Caldeira agreed to take a moment and answer a few questions that some of the Wizrocklopedia’s lovely ladies concocted. The interview itself took place between Christian and staff member khittie.

First, I want to thank you, Christian, for sitting down and taking the time to do this interview with us. The following is a list composed of questions thought up by the entire Wizrocklopedia staff. We hope you have as much fun answering our questions as we did thinking them up!

Are you more nervous or excited about your upcoming shows?
I have to say I’m not excited about the upcoming shows. I’ve been playing music live for years now, so the nervousness has subsided.

When did you first start reading the Harry Potter series and what made you start?
I was working at a book store called Chapters (pretty much looks the exact same as your Borders), and decided to give the first HP book a try. I have to admit I was a “HP is for kids man” type of person, but after the first book I got into it. It wasn’t until I saw the first couple movies that I really started to enjoy the series, though. Before that I was just a casual reader.

Do you have any stories about cute things your dog has done?
Cute things my dog has done? Wow, where to begin, lol. Everything she does is cute, so it’s hard to try and pinpoint one. Well, she does this thing when she wants to get attention. If you’re in the same room as her, she does a big “huff’n’puff”, flops down on the ground on her side, then slowly rolls over onto her back, and waits in that position until someone comes over and rubs her tummy. It’s possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever witnessed.

What are some cool places to visit while in Toronto?
This is a good question because so many fans will be in Toronto for Prophecy. Hmm..Toronto’s a mixed bag. There are a lot of cool things to do and see, but a lot of crazy things as well. You can always do the tourist thing and check out the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), Science Centre, etc. Then again, Toronto has some of the best food in the world, no joke. We’re a really multicultural city, so you can get practically any type of food you want. Not just your typical Italian, Chinese, French, etc. but multitudes of other stuff. Pretty much, if you can think of it, we can find somewhere that makes it (and makes it amazingly). Also, if you’re a shopper, you gotta go to the Eaton Centre. It’s a huge downtown mall. Great stores, great people, great time. We should all make a trip of it one of the days. 🙂

Will you give us a tour of your apartment?
Absolutely not, nobody needs to see the mess I live in. 😛

You do so much modern music, but some are of the opinion that your voice is incredibly retro and Stevie Wonder-esque. Have you thought about creating any new songs that have a more 70’s feel to them, a la Stevie?
For wizard rock, no, I can’t say I have thought about that. I started wizard rock as a fun way to express more of my rock side. The music I actually do is more soulful pop rock stuff, which has closer ties to Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Gavin DeGraw, David Ryan Harris, etc. My other MySpace is where that stuff is at.

Why are you a Hufflepuff?
Why am I a Hufflepuff, hmm… Well, to be honest, I didn’t feel that I fit into any other house. Where in Hogwarts do the artsy, musician types go? Everyone always says that Hufflepuff is all the leftovers, so I figured that I was a leftover. Though, it worked out well because after further inspection, I believe my personal qualities suit Hufflepuff more than any other house. I think everyone can relate to each house in some way, but for me, Hufflepuff, with their more relaxed attitude, just seemed to work.

Could you tell us more about how you got started musically?
I grew up in a musical family, my father being a singer/musician, and my sister singing. I started playing guitar when I was about 12, though I was the quiet shy family member who didn’t open his mouth to sing until he was 15. Though even then it was only in my bedroom. I didn’t start actually putting myself out there as a “singer” until I was in my late teens/early twenties.

What do you do in your non-wrock life?
I go to school. I’m learning to be an audio engineer, which is fun, but very intense.

What was the first wizard rock song you ever heard?
I think it was “Looking For Trouble” by The Remus Lupins. Yes, I think that was it.

If you met JK Rowling and she asked you to play an OBatR song, which would you play?
I don’t know what song I’d play really.. Maybe “The Hallows,” but that’s kind of a melancholy tune, so maybe “Bridge To The Other Side” or “Train To Nowhere.”

What would you do for a Klondike bar?
I think I’ve had one Klondike bar in my entire life. Seeing as though I’ve been able to get by without the desire for said bars, I think the most I would do for one would be to ask for it. If that didn’t get me results, I’d just move on. 😛

Has your rememberall ever turned red because you’ve forgotten something important?
I forget something everyday. I have a terrible memory and would forget to take my head with me if it wasn’t attached to my neck.

Are you into hiking, fishing, or other outdoorsy activities?
I like fishing, though haven’t done it in years. As for outdoorsy activities, I don’t know. I’m not a “woodsy” type of person. I hate bugs. I like being outdoors, don’t get me wrong, I’m just more of a city boy.

How many times do you say “eh?” in a sentence?
Very funny, ladies. Actually, I rarely say “eh.” I lived in the states for a bunch of years when I was younger, so I don’t really have a thick Canadian accent. Though really, the only differences between Canadian and American are how we pronounce words with “out” sounds in them. You can thank our British influence for that.

What is your best childhood memory?
I don’t think I have a “best” childhood memory, though if I was to pick my favorite period of my childhood it would be when I lived in Las Vegas for a handful of years when I was 6. The weather was great (good ol’ dry heat), my friends were fun, and I mean come on, it was Vegas!

What kind of dragon would you like to fight against?
I’ve never thought about this question. I don’t know really. I guess I need to refresh my dragon history. I guess any other than the Hungarian Horntail. Though in all likelihood, I’d probably try and talk my way out of the fight in the first place. 😉

What is your favorite…
…wrock song that you’ve written?

I don’t know about this one. It’s always the last song I wrote. Though I really think “Bridge To The Other Side” is a pretty solid tune, wizard rock or not.

…piece of clothing?
I’m not too partial to any particular piece of clothing. Though I have a black t-shirt that says “WTF?” in white across the chest which I like.

…color?
Or colour for us Canucks and Brits 😛 Hmm… I guess a nice royal blue. I’d say black but it’s a shade.

…food?
Once again, this is another area where I don’t really have a favorite. I enjoy things that are prepared well. I could say beef bourguignon, but if it’s not made well… I think I can like anything as long as it’s not too crazy (i.e. cow tongue, monkey brains, etc.) and it’s prepared properly.

What three things would you take with you to a deserted island?
Well, with this question you can either get artsy or practical, so I’ll go half way. I’d take a satellite cellphone :P, a big swiss army knife, and for fun, my iPod loaded with hundreds of albums, audiobooks, tv shows, and movies. 🙂

Do you like macaroni and cheese?
I like homemade macaroni and cheese. When the mac’n’cheese is more of a casserole, when real cheese is used, yes I enjoy it.

What are you looking forward to most this summer: the release of the 5th movie, the 7th book, or Prophecy?
That’s a hard one. I know for sure that the 5th movie is at the bottom of the list. I for sure want to see it, but let’s be serious, it’s just a movie. It pales in comparison with the FINAL book, AND getting to meet a ton of awesome people that I’ve only known through the computer. Now, which one of those holds higher importance? I guess the 7th book, but really, I can’t wait for Prophecy. 🙂

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Honestly, I bite into them within the first minute. I always try to make those things last, but it never works.

Boxers of briefs?
Boxer briefs all the way. You get length AND support. What a perfect combination.

Are you seeing anyone right now?
Am I seeing anyone right now? Nope, I’m the only person in the room so I can’t see anyone else. 😛

And finally, will you marry me?
It depends, will you buy me dinner first?

Thank you, Christian!
Thanks for the interview! I really appreciate being the Wizard Rock Band Of The Month!
