Wizard Rock FAQ

What is wizard rock?

In short, wizard rock is a genre of music that started in about 2002 in the United States, and has since grown internationally. Wizard rock bands are characterized by their performances about the Harry Potter universe.

Where can I find wizard rock bands?

Everywhere you look is the broad answer, but you can check out Your Wizard Rock Resource for a list of all bands past and present. There you can find links to the bands’ current websites, social media, and where to get their music. You can also check out the tags wizard rock and Harry Potter on Bandcamp.

Are there any shows in my area?

Possibly! A handful of bands tour on a regular basis, but there are also local shows happening in different places, as well as live streams. We recommend checking your favorite bands’ social media as well as the Wizrocklopedia’s show’s page and calendar. Also check out LeakyCon’s Wizard Rock Wednesdays and WZRD Radio’s monthly event updates.

Any big wizard rock events?

Way back when there used to be this lovely show called Wrockstock, but alas that is no more. No fear though! Throughout the year there are a number of Harry Potter conventions and symposiums happening regularly, many of which feature wizard rock such as LeakyCon.

Almost every winter there is the Yule Ball, a three day mini-tour hosted by Harry and the Potters that takes place in DC, Brooklyn, and Boston.

Brian of Draco and the Malfoys also hosts quarterly shows at Malfoy Manor, which you can find on Facebook.

I’ve only heard of three bands, how can I discover more?

Finding new wizard rock bands to listen to is easier than ever (even if MySpace went away). Check out this list below of resources to find new wizard rock to pump through your headphones

I want to find other wizard rock fans! Where can I look?

Wizard rock fans are all over social media, but two places to find them in concentration are the Wizard Rock Revival Facebook group and the Wizard Rock Discord.

I want to start a wizard rock band! What do I do?

First of all, yay! We love new bands and can’t wait to hear your music!

Make sure you check out the Wizard Rock Sampler and the Yes All Witches grant. Then keep an eye on the articles here, because we’ll have some advice posts from wrockers sharing their best tips. Beyond that, just have fun! Pretty much every band you love started by recording on their phones, and look where they are now!

Wizrocklopedia FAQ

Where do you find your news?

A variety of social media platforms and strategic tag notifications. Way back we used MySpace to help keep track of bands, but alas that is a relic of the past. Our main staples are Bandcamp and Twitter, to find news to post.

We get our best info from people! Websites and social media are helpful, but it’s members of the community that put events together, so that’s who we look to to find out about those events.

Is the ‘Pedia on social media?

That we are! Delivering news by owl post and floo is not as effective. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Does the ‘Pedia have a policy against bullying and harassment?

We sure do.

Do y’all need help?

Honestly, we’re always looking for more help. We are looking for writers, designers, dragon herders, live show reporters, social media managers, and website maintenance. Basically, if you’ve got a talent or skill you want to use to help make the ‘pedia robust, we’d be happy to have you!

Wizrocklopedia needs you! We’re always on the lookout for new members of the ‘pedia team.

Want to write for us? We’re always looking for:

  • Reviews of wrock events
  • Album reviews
  • Personal stories
  • Interviews with fans and creators
  • Advice for new wrockers
  • Advice for people new to the scene
  • Anything else you can think of!

Want to contribute in other ways? We need you too!

  • Photography: if you’ve got old pictures or want to attend events and take new ones, we want to see and share them!
  • Web design: Your ‘pedia team is not the most computer savvy. We need you to explain how the website works to us in tiny words and help/teach us to maintain it!
  • Artists: Do you have wrock fan art? Want to help make the ‘pedia beautiful? We want to see and share your talent!
  • Love social media? Come post for us so the world can see the awesome stuff our community is creating!
  • Something else? We promise we need it, especially if it’s something we haven’t even thought of yet!
