The Album
Harry Slaughter is an elusive wizard rapper, “Charming his way into witches… hearts. Cursing his way to the top of the wizarding charts.” After a wrockin’ single a year prior – Potion Mixin’ Master – he dropped Harry Slaughter and the Lost Album on June 8, 2020. With a dozen tracks, the album reimagines the wizarding world in terms of the magic of rap.
The Tracks
The Wiz MC introduces the concept: In the magical world of Harry Slaughter, Hogwarts is a rap school, duels are cyphers, and magical skill means spitting mad bars. The lost album is a collection of tracks chronicling Harry Slaughter’s tale, starting at the beginning.
Vernon’s shouts resolve into the beautiful ambient chords of D Alley, resembling the move from abusive home to the magical world. I love how this song captures Harry’s wide-eyed wonder at Diagon Alley, with a lovely chorus sang by the only featured vocalist on the album.
Next, we check in with how Harry Slaughter feels about being the wiz MC in the introspective Witch I’m a Wizard. My jaw dropped when the “Potion Mixin’ Master” beat came in, flawlessly integrated into a verse.
Sorted gives a bit of a rap battle between Harry Slaughter and Da Hat as they argue over Harry’s House.
Get down to Fly High Quidditch Anthem (honestly the banger of the album) and Galleons Over Witches (a real treat with next-level wordplay).
The Dob B Da Free persona in Defiant is a cute idea, then MacDraco and Rich Daddy Luce spit about all things evil in Pure.
We see what Harry Slaughter is up against when Lord Voldey takes the mic in Marvolos Riddlez, which in my opinion rivals “Witch I’m a Wizard” for catchiest hook.
Good thing Harry has his crew – Big Boy Hags and AD Rhymez – who come back at Voldey with diss track Saturdays Are 4 the Wizards.
Cue hilarious outro: The Lost Album.
In Summary
Slaughter is a master world builder. His – frankly stunning – body of work constructs a cohesive, unique fan-created alternate universe, unprecedented in its medium. I’ve had so much fun listening to the story of the lost album – in which he impressively voices so many distinct characters! Whatever his intentions with his art, Harry Slaughter truly captures the spirit of wizard rap.
