The Album
Friends, I hope you are having a wonderful day. Today we are going to listen to Good to See You Wallaenby by KwikSpell. After doing some soul-searching, I have decided that this will be my last wrock review for the ‘pedia. I love the wizard rock community and will continue to be a part of it, but because of the author I need to distance myself just a little bit. With that being said, I am truly excited to review this album from 2010.
The Tracks
The album begins with the title of the album, Good to See You Wallaenby. Ron sings about his feelings about Harry Potter and what it’s like to be overshadowed by him every time. This is a high energy song with rockin’ guitar and drum set, and the energy brought by the vocals sure got me hype for the rest of the album.
Lucky Tonight keeps the hype train rolling with a forward moving rhythm. I first heard Hawthorn & Holly’s version of this song – Felix Felicis – from the 2016 Wizard Rock Sampler, so getting to hear this older (and very different!) version was super cool. I love how the syncopated rhythms fit in with each other and the melody is amazing.
Sweet vocals and soft guitar brings in Madame Pomphrey. This is a deliciously adorable song that ramps up the energy during the second chorus. I’m obsessed with the lyrics and how the singer wants the Hogwarts doctor to mend a broken heart.
Boy in the Girls Restroom is about Draco trying to figure out his life now that he is working for Voldemort. We are introduced to some cool harmonies and an unexpected but refreshing melody. I loved the beat in this song and how well the singer conveys Draco’s complicated feelings about who he is and what he needs to do.
Next up is Out Through the Cupboard. As we all know, no one should have to hide in the closet. This song is such a great representation of that idea, with a hopeful sound looking toward the future.
Firenze and I Are Friends is an incredibly quick and high energy song that reminds me of a Harry and the Potters type of song.
A beautiful love song to Harry, Somewhere encapsulates a wide range of emotions for the boy who lived. I really enjoyed the repetitive lyrics and how sweetly the song ended.
Lastly, we have Gillyweed (The Neville Song). It gave me a sea shanty vibe, and it was my favorite song on the album. It reminded me of sitting next to the lake at Hogwarts, throwing toast to the giant squid. The instrumentals are incredible in this one, and the way the words flow feels effortless. This was the perfect way to end my last wrock review.
In Summary
I have really enjoyed writing all of these wrock reviews for the last couple years, and I hope you have enjoyed listening with me. KwikSpell gave me just what I needed in this wonderful album to feel a sense of hope. This uplifting album raised my spirits and reminded me why I love this community. I hope it brings you the same joy.
Until next time, this is TK signing off. <3
