The Album
Album cover designed by PanoFarm
I love Pottörhead‘s music and I felt that it was time to do a review of one of their albums. I have been lucky enough to have them submit songs to recent compilations such as the sea shanties comps, and I am always impressed by what they come up with. Today we’re going to take a listen to Back to the Shack, which is a six track EP that features new songs, old songs, live tracks, and demos. Get ready to get loud!
The Tracks
We start the album with a song by the same title: Back to the Shack. This is a great song to start off with, because it really sets the precedent for what to expect from this band and their sound. Hailing from Germany, the main vocalist rocks out with an awesome accent. The instruments are heavy and rock as hard as the vocals do.
Hufflepuff Girl is an upbeat song with a repeating theme of being in love with a Hufflepuff girl. It has a wonderful melody with a key change near the end of the song.
Next up is Defense Against the Dark Arts (Demo). Honestly, if the title of the song didn’t say “demo” I would not have thought it was only a demo. It has a complete sound, amazing lyrics, and a wonderful chord progression.
I really enjoyed listening to Brain Room (Rehearsal). It is so cool to listen in on rehearsals, and I thought this was a great take. I also love Brain Room anyway, rehearsal or not. The guitar solo shreds, and the energy is clearly very high in this practice session.
I Like You (But…) (Live at O.W.L. Fest) is a short ditty about liking someone but then finding out that they don’t like wizard rock.
The final track is Did You Know (Live in Bittenfeld). This is another short one at only 40 seconds long. It is funny and meta and a great short end to a great short album.
In Summary
The energy and passion that Pottörhead always brings to their music makes my heart happy. This is only a short sampling of their work, and I highly encourage you to check out their other music both on their Bandcamp and also on the various compilation albums of which they are a part.
