Stuff I missed from the first six months of the year:
March 16: Hard Toffee – Harry’s Lullaby: iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
This unique and wrocking album by the mysterious band Hard Toffee was released way back in March, and I have to thank TK from Totally Knuts for letting me know about its existence! There are a couple of songs that don’t work that well in my opinion, but it’s a great album overall that is 100% worth a listen!
July 2: Dream Quaffle – “Sirius Rap:” Bandcamp
We get our column started off right with Dream Quaffle’s hip hop banger from the perspective of Sirius Black hunting Pettigrew! Incredible rhymes y’all!
July 9: The Chocolate Frogs – From Hogsmeade with Love album: Bandcamp
The Wizrocklopedia Music Archive rereleased two of the Chocolate Frogs’ classic EPs in June—and they rereleased two more Chocolate Frogs records in July! From Hogsmeade with Love is the Chocolate Frogs’ only full-length album, and it’s full of wonderful music!
July 9: The Chocolate Frogs – Lives, B-Sides and Covers album: Bandcamp
Most of the songs on this Chocolate Frogs album had never ever been publicly released before! It’s a collection of live concert recordings, demoes and other oddities that cropped up over the years—and it’s a real banger of a record!
July 9: Swish and Flick – “Beastmaster Scamander:” iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
This jazzalicious song by Swish and Flick—their final recorded track!—was originally released on Fandom Forward’s 2017 compilation Fantastic Beats and Where to Drop Them. They finally released it publicly as a single in July!
July 10: ArgenPotter ft. Pablo Flores Torres and Capa Invisible – “Como un Horrocrux:” iTunes | Spotify | YouTube | Video
Wizard rock reggaeton (Wreggaeton)? YES PLEASE! Argentinian Potterhead YouTubers ArgenPotter, Pablo Flores Torres and Capa Invisible released this incredible track—their first song together! If this tale of wizardly breakups doesn’t leave your head bopping, I don’t know what will!
July 16: Potter Ink – Tales from the Giant Squid album: Bandcamp
The Wizrocklopedia rereleased this criminally underrated album by NYC wrocker Potter Ink! It’s wonderfully written acoustic wrock, and
July 18: Friends of Hagrid – “Who Feeds the Basilisk?:” Bandcamp
New wrocker Friends of Hagrid burst onto the scene with this debut single, a complex and meta-referential guitar-driven song about many different aspects of HP.
July 30: Candle Wix – “Muggle Town:” Bandcamp
It me! I woke up one morning & recorded this parody of Daniel Johnston’s “Devil Town,” retold to be from Quirrell’s perspective!
July 30: Kathryn Hoss – “Pomona:” Bandcamp | iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
An absolutely brilliant song, Kathryn Hoss’ “Pomona” is about Prof. Sprout and Madam Hooch falling in love. I get chills every time I hear it!
August 5: Potterwatch – “Durmstrang:” Bandcamp
Originally released on the amazing compilation Hut on the Wrock: A Sea Shanty Comp, Potterwatch gave their rollicking tune “Durmstrang,” about sailing on Karkaroff’s ship, a single release on August 5!
August 5: Potterwatch – “The Love You Seek is All Around You:” Bandcamp
Also on August 5, Potterwatch came out with a brand-new, never-before-heard single. A beautiful song about Harry Potter finding his chosen family and love at last, this song is not to be missed! Additionally, half of all the proceeds go to MermaidsUK and the Trevor Project! Woot!
August 6: Various artists – From Beneath These Ashes album: Bandcamp
The Wizrocklopedia Music Archive rereleased this MASSIVE, 30-song compilation from 2009! It features many songs that can be found nowhere else, intriguingly themed along the subject lines “Light” and “Dark!” What a great slice of wrock history!
August 16: Mermanda – “Stars (Demo):” Bandcamp
Mermanda continues to release occasional songs inspired by Dots & Lines’ Bertie Botts Every Flavor Jam on the Wizrocklopedia! This is an autoharp-driven ditty about McGonagall’s experience of Harry’s first look at the great hall!
August 19: How Airplanes Fly – “Save Ginny Beat:” Soundcloud
Well, this is random, but we love it! How Airplanes Fly looped a live recording of Harry and the Potters’ classic song “Save Ginny Weasley” to a hip hop beat—and it high key slaps!
August 20: The Purebloods – The Purebloods album: Bandcamp
Disco? Country? Ballads? They’re all here on the Purebloods’ one and only album, now rereleased by the Wizrocklopedia Music Archive! When you’re done jamming out to this one, listen to the Purebloods’ new cover song from January 2021!
August 24: Nur Peach – “I Open at the Close:” Facebook | Instagram
Brand-new wrocker uploaded this live video of her incredibly soulful piano-driven ballad about Harry in the Forbidden Forest in August! It’s not officially recorded yet, but her work is waaaaay too good not to include here! Shades of the Butterbeer Experience, y’all!
August 27: Nur Peach – “The Next Great Adventure:” Facebook | Instagram
Three days later, the world was gifted with another incredible Nur Peach track! Musing on the nature of death and life, this haunting lullaby is about Nicolas Flamel! The lyrics are exquisite!
August 28: Tom Smith – “Hogwarts El Paso:” Bandcamp
A parody of “El Paso?” About fanfic? Sign me up!!! The lyrics in this song are delightfully sarcastic and witty. They poke fun at fanfic with the greatest love possible!
August 29: The Faithful Sidekicks – “WandOS:” Bandcamp
Originally briefly released during February Album Writing Month (see this previous Six Month Report entry), the Faithful Sidekicks’ brilliant singing commercial “WandOS” got a real release on their hilarious album Sales of Interest!
That’s an incredible amount of truly incredible wrock! But y’all, please believe me when I say we are only getting started!!! Stay tuned next week for part two of the Wizard Rock Six Month Report!
