Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam: October 2021

A "Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Jams" sweets label with red and white stripes and the text on a yellow scroll.

Happy October, everyone! As another month rolls in, so does a new Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam, a monthly creative challenge to make something of any medium on a theme. Last month’s theme was transportation, and that was certainly a wild ride. Want to know this month’s theme? Hold your hippogriffs! First, let’s take a look at all the transportation creations.

Bess, hostwitch of WZRD Radio Podcast, designed an inter-fictional traveling device: a cross between a typical Hogwarts school trunk and the Luggage from Terry Pratchett’s stories. I can’t help but wonder if this is a a Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes creation, or one of Hagrid’s petsperhaps both?

Sagan of Candlewix wondered whether the Hogwarts Express was the only magical train around, and they soon answered their own question with the Magical Railways of the World™ Theme Song. Sung from the perspective of the engineer of the Hogwarts Express, this quick ditty takes us around the globe with a rhythm that feels like building steam.

I started writing a Dots and Lines song about a new model of broom. It’s still in the unfinished draft stage, but I’m excited to work on it further! The following is what I have so far.

There’s a nice little notch on the handle end that’s good for carrying groceries
There’s a pre-installed water detection charm with an optional anti-rain bubble
And in case the competition falls apart in fright, it’s still good to sweep up the ruuuubble…

Bum bum bum

(Spoken) Of course, what you’re all wondering now is: What about Quidditch?

Well, the Comet 360 is mighty fine for players in every position
From the professional leagues to the pick-up games, you’ll score with this newest edition
Acceleration’s smooth and the braking charm is tested for perfect precision
Plus three-dimensional maneuverability to avoid any airborne collision

Now that we’ve safely arrived at the end of the article, it’s time to announce our challenge for October: the liminal. As All Hallow’s Eve draws near, it seems right to look to transitions and in-betweens as inspiration. This might mean anything from doorways to twilight to grand life changes, or so many other things. What comes to mind for you? I look forward to finding out!

On the Wizard Rock Discord, we were discussing ’60s-themed comp ideas (potential ideas: bubblegum pop, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys) & I just randomly was goofing around & wrote a verse of a parody of “I Get Around” by the Beach Boys but it’s Kreacher:

I’m gettin’ bugged when I’m livin’ in 12 Grimmauld Place
I got these mudblood traitors all up in my face
I’m passing all the Order’s secrets to Lord Voldemort’s men
Now if they’d stop trashing up my mistress’ house again”

Maybe to fit in w/the theme it could be something like Kreacher’s trapped in between 2 rival factions & he doesn’t like the transition between his old life & the new OTP-centric life or something? I dunno…

How do you feel about wizard rock playlists as submissions? I was inspired by your theme and created a playlist on “the liminal” for the November Wrock Listening Party on the Wizard Rock Discord. Here’s the tracklist:

    1. The Hermione Crookshanks Experience – Trains, Doubts, and Dreams
    2. Malfoy Manor – New Recruits
    3. Seven Potters – Seven Past Five From Stoatshead Hill
    4. Catchlove – The Lonely Life of Sir Nick
    5. Sonorus – The Next Great Adventure
    6. Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls – Train to Nowhere
    7. The Weasel King – The Flying Motorbike
    8. Danny Dementor – Death(Adolescent Mix)
    9. Anvil and the Hints – The Pendulum
    10. Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons – Lightning
    11. Hollow Godric – Trainride
    12. RiddleTM – Beyond The Veil
    13. Harry and the Potters – Two Weeks to Myself
    14. The Honeyduke’s Cellar Gang – The Last September
    15. The Butterbeer Experience – Christmas Mirror
    16. The Blibbering Humdingers – I Lose Myself

These songs are about many liminal things: train rides, motorbike rides, summer holidays, ghosts, moments just before and after death, spaces between death and life, and how life as a wrock/HP fan is about straddling the space between this fictional world and our world to better understand and enrich our own.
