The Albums
Today we’re going to review three wizard rock albums! Why? Because they’re all by the same artist, and they’re all Christmas-themed! Plus, this will be the last Christmas wizard rock album that I’ll be reviewing until December. These three wonderful Bagmas albums come to us from Ludo Bagman and the Trash. Ludo is a nonbinary bag-wrocker who does the very important job of informing folks on proper bag usage, as well as writing incredible music. I’m a long-time fan of their music, and I’m very excited to bring you these reviews today.
The Tracks
Let’s start with the original Bagmas album. A Very Merry Bagmas only has two songs in it. It was released on December 20, 2017.
Snowman makes me gasp every time I listen to it. We’ve never seen Ludo without their bag, so when a gust of cold wind blows their bag away, they meet a friendly snowman who helps them find it again. This song has guitar, jingle bells, tambourine, and awesome harmonies. Everything you need in a good Bagmas song, to be honest.
The second song is called For the Holidays. I am obsessed with Ludo’s vocals in this song – they’re so smooth and calming. When I listen to this song, I want to grab a butterbeer and raise my glass to… well, listen to the song, and find out.
A Very Merry Bagmas Vol. 2 jumps from two songs to five! This one was released on December 23, 2018.
Last Bagmas (a Parody) is the first song on the album, and is a parody of Last Christmas. Honestly, I like this version better than the original. The harmonies in it are incredible – and you know me – I love me some good harmonies. My partner and I will catch ourselves randomly singing the chorus of Ludo’s version.
The next song is called The Great Hall is Great. It starts with some amazing guitar finger picking, which gives way to strumming, but I am no less impressed by it. I actually really love the instrumentals in this song. The lyrics transport me to the Great Hall in Hogwarts, which is decked out for Christmas with trees, lights, and decorations. The third verse is my absolute favorite.
Ludo at the Yule Ball (Dance With Me) is next up. This tune has a great beat which is backed up with an awesome percussion track. I would definitely use this song to ask someone to the Yule Ball. It’s also a perfect song to dance to!
What do you want for Christmas? I don’t know about you, but I Want a New Bag. This catchy tune will make you want a new bag too.
The last piece in this volume is A Very Merry Bagmas From Ludo Bagman and the Trash. With help from Joe DeGeorge, Tianna Mignogna, and Steph Anderson, we get a very helpful bag PSA for everyone who wraps presents for Christmas. Make sure to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
Finally, we have A Very Merry Bagmas Vol. 3, which (as of writing this) is the most recent. It was released on December 23, 2020, and features Danielle Gennaro on piano and Brian Ross on the bass. This volume has a jazz lounge feeling to it.
We start off with a new rendition of Last Bagmas, which has an awesome slow swing vibe. I didn’t believe the original (parody) could get better, but here we are, folks.
Are you ready to Deck the Halls (With Bags Aplenty)? This one is short, sweet, and warns of the dangers of wearing a plastic bag (don’t do it!).
Jingle Bag is next up. I can’t get over how beautiful the piano is, and again it really is a better song than the original in my opinion.
O Paper Bag is all about how awesome bags really are. I love snapping along to this song. It has such a wonderful beat.
We finish off this volume with Auld Paper Bag. Ludo’s voice in this one is so nice and calming. It is a wonderful ending to another amazing volume of Bagmas music.
In Summary
All three of these volumes bring the spirit of Bagmas to anyone listening. With magical instrumentals, awesome collabs, and lyrics that are sure to have you putting a bag on your own head (just not a plastic one, please!), these volumes are perfect to listen to around the holiday season – or any other time of the year. All in all, I give these three volumes 3/3 bags.
