Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam: November 2020

A "Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Jams" sweets label with red and white stripes and the text on a yellow scroll.
Welcome back to the Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam, a monthly creative challenge for everyone to participate in! For October, our theme was “Do something that scares you.” Apparently, that scared off a lot of our participants… but not Zoë from Dots and Lines!

“Great Hall Bats” is a gorgeous little song from recent Yes All Witches grant winner Dots and Lines. Here’s what the artist had to say: “Writing original songs (as opposed to parodies) makes me nervous, since I’m not confident coming up with melodies. Harmonies make me similarly nervous. But hey, this challenge is a good reason for me to just give it a go!”

Well, we have to say you crushed it, Zoë. The harmonies are a nice touch, the staccato notes in the chorus are a lovely surprise against the legato verses, and the bat facts are just perfect for this time of year.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get your October entry in on time – you can still face those fears and post your creative works in the comments to last month’s post, and we’ll add them in here for all to see.

Now, on to November’s challenge: our theme this month is “Diagon Alley!” You can interpret that in any way you want – write a jingle for a business there, sing about shopping for books or school supplies, draw a picture of the crooked streets, dance to a song that relates to the theme, or even cover a song by the band Diagon Alley! You don’t have to do music, any and all creative expression is welcomed here. Put whatever you make in the comments and we’ll celebrate it in next month’s wrap-up post! We can’t wait to see what you create.

    Hi folks!

I woke up this morning with this song playing in my head, so I figured I’d record it. It’s just a capella for now, but I hope I can put music of some sort to it at some point. Anyhoo, enjoy! You can download it from Google Drive below. Do you think I should put it up on Bandcamp?

Oh, the shops are all closed or just open at 50%
Gringotts has “Protego” permanently cast if you went
The Leaky Cauldron is barren; no magic users to be seen
Yes, it’s Diagon Alley in the time of Covid-19.

Reminds me of the war, the shops are all boarded like the past
Don’t go to Knockturn Alley though, cuz no one there’s wearing a mask
Everything here seems all colored with a dark greyish sheen
Yes, it’s Diagon Alley in the time of Covid-19.

But don’t fret too much, although it’s OK to be sad
We can link mirrors and talk about all the good times we had
And the Ministry’s working on a free magic potion vaccine
Yes, it’s Diagon Alley in the time of Covid-19.

Oh, it’s Diagon Alley in the time of Covid-19.

I’ve had the idea for a while to do sort of a reverse wizard rock parody, taking a wrock song and making it about a muggle topic. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far this month, but I’ll share what I’ve got.

To the tune of Hey! Mr. Ollivander by RiddleTM:

There’s a shop in Phoenix, Arizona
And half of all the country will come there, you see
He finds shoes for ballerinas about to go en pointe
And he knows just how to fit them
    So he’ll never disappoint

    Hey Mr. Pointe Shoe Fitter
What shoes are you finding today?

Everyone’s songs & poems & snippets are amazing! I just finished drafting next month’s post, so I’ll save my fawning & gushing for there.

I am going to slide in with a contribution of my own – a cover of “Quiet Night” by Diagon Alley. They used to close shows with it and it was such a wonderful group singalong that always warmed my heart. I was feeling nostalgic for it tonight.

    Here’s the vid: https://youtu.be/tY1BUhAKXX0

I’d really love to cover it on dulcimer sometime.
