The Wrock Wreview: The Butterdemo

Butterdemo

Hello, magical beings! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been enjoying the change of the seasons. There’s nothing like cooler weather, a cup of coffee, and good music. Speaking of good music, today I’m going to be reviewing The Butterdemo by The Buttermellows. This 2009 demo was recently rereleased by Wizrocklopedia!

I have been a fan of this band for over ten years. Saryna Collette, the front-woman behind the music, uses her beautiful voice to evoke emotion and bring the listener further into the story she’s telling. Saryna hails from the pacific northwest and you can hear that influence in her songs. One of my favorite things about The Buttermellows is the way that they phrase their lyrics. They are conversational and simple – not to say that they don’t require thought, but they’re able to get across the message of the song with few words.

If this is the first time you’ve heard this artist, I envy you! Enjoy the journey!

The Tracks

Let’s look at track one! Who among us doesn’t wish they could Apparate? Immediately I’m reminded of the muggle band Neutral Milk Hotel. Don’t let the acoustic guitar fool you, this song rocks.

We get more into Saryna’s impressive vocals with Are You Sure You’re Not a Veela. Minor chords emphasize the uncertainty of the singer who is struggling with their intense emotions of love for someone else.

Holy Harmonica! The harmonies created with the harmonica and electronic trumpet add delicious layers onto this next track. Dearest Delusional has a message for Tonks: Honey, he’s gay. #Wolfstar5ever

The descending guitar in this song has been stuck in my head since I relistened a couple of days ago. In Don’t Fight For Me, Ginny asks Harry to not lie or stay and fight for her, but just to come back when he’s saved the wizarding world. Priorities, I guess.

Let’s Go For A Fly is our next track. Pulling from Americana and folk tunes, this song tickles the eardrums with the addition of a banjo. The lyrics of this song are engaging and make me feel like I’m taking a flight across Appalachia.

Taking the perspective of Sirius Black, this next track talks about growing up being concerned with the Purity of Blood and finding your way out of that limited way of thinking. An experience we can all learn from.

Our final song is another song for Sirius Black. From Harry’s point of view, the song expresses grief for the loss of Godfather. I remember this death hitting us all very hard. In the song, she sings, “Damn that Gryffindor bravery!”. But would Sirius be Sirius if he didn’t follow his heart?

In Summary

All in all, this demo is a quick (clocking in at 22 minutes) and fun listen for fans of folk and wizard rock. Saryna has a beautiful voice that compliments her playing and lyrics so well.

I rate this demo…..
