Welcome, one and all, to the second part of the January-June 2020 Wizard Rock Six Month Report! You can check out the first part here, and the third part here. Without further ado, let’s jump straight back into the releases! We pick up on May 2 with a couple of incredible reissued compilations…
May 2: Various Artists – Letters from Hogwarts album: Bandcamp
The Wizrocklopedia Music Archive reissued this awesome wrock compilation, originally put together by Tonks and the Aurors in 2008. A variety of artists bring a wide assortment of songs to the mix!
May 2: Various Artists – Wrock Against Bullying album: Bandcamp
On the same day as Letters from Hogwarts, the ‘Pedia reissued this 2008 compilation from the Vanishing Cabinet. It contains 23 songs in a huge variety of musical styles!
May 9: As I Lay Dobby – The MySpace Singles EP: Bandcamp
The Wizrocklopedia reissued this compilation of singles from underground wizard metal band As I Lay Dobby! They never had an official album or EP back in the day, but their songs all shred and it’s great to have them available again.
May 15: Pottörhead – Back to the Shack EP: Bandcamp
Germany’s Pottörhead brings all the punk on this rollicking EP, their second effort. Their songs are funny and catchy, bringing levity to the Potterverse!
May 26: The Forbidden Forest – “Born of the Centaurs:” Bandcamp | Google Play
The Forbidden Forest, also known as Graeme of the Lovegoods, brings a new sound to wizard rock in his nearly 9-minute debut single: ambient electronica. This piece of music evokes the magical creation of Hogwarts’ Forbidden Forest by its centaurs.
May 27: The Hinky Punks – “Scarred:” iTunes | Spotify | YouTube
This single by the newly reactivated band the Hinky Punks is an evocation of depression and working through one’s problems, which could easily apply to Harry’s struggles during book 5.
May 27: Lily and James – “Fred:” Bandcamp
Lily and James’ newly reissued single “Fred” is a heartfelt eulogy for Fred Weasley, as sung by George Weasley. It’ll probably make you cry! It’s so sad, but so good!
May 27: Return of the Deskpig – “Slytherin House Is A Bad Place (For Puffs):” YouTube
Hufflepuffs always lose in this piano-based single by comedic wizard rock band Return of the Deskpig. Might just get stuck in your head—but you won’t mind!
May 28: Ludo Bagman and the Trash – “Wizard Quarantine:” Bandcamp
Ludo Bagman’s latest release wittily imagines how wizards are dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The writing in this one is so clever!
May 29: homo qui vixit – “All Your Faves:” Bandcamp
This song, the first wizard rock tune written in response to J.K. Rowling’s explicit transphobia, was recorded as an acapella demo—but still wrocks! As homo qui vixit helpfully informs you, all of your favorite Potter character are trans and queer! Just in case that wasn’t clear already.
June 5: Flitwick and the Charmers – “Hogsmeade is Burning:” Bandcamp
Flitwick and the Charmers reissued this rousing song from their Sonorous EP as a single so they could donate the proceeds to the Bail Project! They raised more than $40 in a single day!
HOLY cow, there’s some good stuff in there! What was your favorite song? Don’t forget to support all these amazing artists so they can make more tunes. I am super excited to share the third and final part of the 2020 January-June Wizard Rock Six-Month Report with you all tomorrow! As always, if I missed any releases, please let me know in the comments below or email wizrocklopedia [at] gmail [dot] com!
