Question Everyday, part 6

Best Punk Song
Best Metawizardrock Song

This first category has us a little stumped. Were there any true punk songs that came out in 2009?

As for metawizardrock song, Demons at the Helm by The Whomping Willows gives you a whole album of choices. What else was there?

    Wizard Rock Boyfriend- Miss Parkinson
It may also fit into the Punk category, it’s a mix of techno and electric guitar. I have no idea if it would fit into one specific category at all.

Roonil Wazlib’s “Not The End” for metawizard.

Gred & Forge’s “The #1 Reason To Be Nice To House Elves” definitely qualifies as punk.

What’s the exact definition of metawizardrock?

Metawizardrock- “I Wanna Be a Wizard” by Danny Dementor, “Into the Night” by Ministry of Magic, “I Lose Myself” by The Blibbering Humdingers, “Not the End” by Roonil Wazlib.

I would definitely say that Whompy gets it for his whole album, or maybe MC Kreacher for “We Are Wizards” (you also have to throw in Danny Dementor’s I wanna be a Wizard”)

As for punk, I really don’t listen to much Wizard Rock Punk, if there really is much out there

I second “I Lose Myself” by The Blibbering Humdingers!!! <3
I'll list some more once I think hard on this one. I love the metawizard rock category.

    Dear Marauder, et al.,

I will instead give you the definition of metawizardrock song: “any song that talks about the fandom or wizard rock in general.”

Now I am of the impression that “Not the End” is from Molly’s 2008 album Timeturner. But I believe a lot of the other songs that have been suggested are from 2009. Others might be “7 Harry Potter Books” by Hawthorn & Holly, “Her Magic” and “Our Hufflepuff Happy Song” by the Half-Kneazles, “one time max said he liked wizrock lol” by Mary and the GrandPres, and so forth.

A couple of years ago, I didn’t know what punk rock was, so I asked Danii Dinosaur if her song “Oh, Harry” was a punk song. She said it was not, so I asked her what punk was. She told me that “Punk is loud and gritty and sometimes doesn’t have the best vocals…”

I think a lot of Harry and the Potters’ stuff from a couple of years ago is punk rock. Danii mentioned “Keeping Secrets from Me” as an example.

I also looked up punk rock on Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock

Now in 2008, the Whomping Willows had a song called “Ginny Is a Punk Rocker” which was a cover of the Muggle punk song “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker,” which used to be one of the audio examples in the Wikipedia article! So that was clearly a punk song and in fact was nominated in last year’s awards.

This year someone mentioned Switchblade Kittens’ “All Deatheaters Die” having been released on Mark’s comp, which is a cover of their Muggle punk song “All Cheerleaders Die” and is I would say another example of a punk song (but I have only ever heard them play it live — I assume the recording sounds similar).

Other songs I think might be punk and that I think are from 2009 include:

“Bad Guy” – The Basilisk in Your Pasta
    “Marietta’s a Sneak” – Hawthorn & Holly
“Why Fleur Lost the Second Task” – The Giant Squidstravaganza
    “Underwater” – The Giant Squidstravaganza
“I Wanna Be a Professional Baseball Player” – The Giant Squidstravaganza
“Care of Magical Creatures” – Gred and Forge [released on B-Sides album]
“The #1 Reason to Be Nice to House Elves” – Gred and Forge
    “FYI” – Gred and Forge
“Ridin’ in the Night” – Harry and the Potters
“Madame Hooch: Let Me Play Beater for Gryffindor” – The Whomping Willows
“Precious Days” – The Remus Lupins

But I am open to being corrected.

And yeah, Raenwen, “Diadem” sounds sort of punk, but what do I know?

Also I second All Aboard the Knight Bus – wow!

Mulciber Zerstorer for punk, I think. more punk than metal, like “Lara Mallory is not a wizard rocker” or “firewhisky firebomb”

unless there’s a grindcore categroy too.

  12. Russ Avatar

You’re right Art, I stand corrected – “Time Turner” is indeed from 2008. Feels like it just came out to me. Time flies, I guess.

If you’re talking punk, here’s a nice easy way to go about it – if you have to think about whether or not the song is punk, it’s not. Simple.

To break it down further – if the song is fast, loud, short, and to the point = probably punk. If the song sounds like Green Day and/or uses auto-tune = not punk.

The Giant Squidstravatonydanza songs all qualify, as would “Pizza In the Hall” from JFF. Not sure if The Greybacks released anything in 2009, but I’d definitely put them in that category as well, as well as Potter and the Lightning Bolts, Azkaband!, Cruciatus, etc.

And Saryna, thanks for the plug 😀 But “Diadem” is most definitely not punk.

You’re welcome, Russ! So no punk!? Uuugh, I’ve been conditioned by the “punk” scene of the early 2000s, that’s where I was going with that; it makes me dance/head bop like if I were at some “punk” show now-a-days. :] Oh weeeel. I still love it.

ART! YES. All Aboard The Knight Bus is seriously a hidden gem. Love his stuff!

And though I think Demons at the Helm is basically a 35-minute exercise in metawizardrock, I would give the nod to We Are Wizards by MC Kreacher. 🙂

“Her Magic” by The Half Kneazels for metawrock. Not sure about punk, I’ll have to think about it.

Shrieking Shack Disco Gang have a few punk songs. “Molly is the Bomb” is an awesome song!

  18. Dawlish and the Archies Avatar

Though I dearly love both “I Wanna Be A Wizard” and “We Are Wizards”, I’m gunning for those for best Dance and best Rap, respectively, so I’ll have to go with the surprising knock-out song “Not The End” by Roonil Wazlib. Not that I had anything against RW before this – I’ve always been a fan of “Mollywobbles” – but this is far and away the strongest song she’s ever made. Easily one of the best songs from that album (the comp “Beneath These Ashes”).

    Anywho, on to punk…

Actually, I just found out that “Not The End” was originally released in 2008. Woops.

Anywho, on to wizard punk, which I am a bit surprised that there’s not too much awareness of, since it seems that for the 07 awards there was a wide field to choose from.

Firstly, nothing against TGSS, but is “Death To Humans” being counted for 2009 awards? I mean, technically, it was mailed to everyone in 2009, but it was nominated for the 2008 awards, and though I would dearly love to see TGSS get his just recognition, I don’t know if it’s fair to be nominated two years in a row for the exact same releases.

Now, ACTUALLY on to the punk songs.

Butterbeer – The Wizards of Death Metal: An absolutely amazing song filled with raw punk energy and one of my favorite lyrics ever, but it isn’t afraid to make fun of itself, by coupling perfectly good guitar handiwork with a kazoo.

Watch Me Grow Older – The Whomping Willows: Though not my favorite on the album (I mean this purely because there’s a lot of really good stuff on the album), this feels very punk, and I had to nom something from this album.

1995 – Lost – Tonks and the Aurors: What to say about this song? This is one of those songs that doesn’t ever mention anything explicitly wizardly, but manages to perfectly capture a time and feeling of a character, and one knows exactly when this is set. Well, I mean, without the handy date in the title.

All Deatheaters Die – The Switchblade Kittens: TSK has been passed over a bit by the wizard rock community, even though they’ve created a fair amount of punkin’ wizard rock music. This song has a driven guitar line, and is catchy. The lyrics aren’t great, but there is some clever rhyming.

Another Vodka For Voldie – Statutory Snape: What at first seems like a bizarre filk of the Cheers theme song turns into a fantastic punk drinking song filled with plenty of bite, plus some cocktail recipes!

Also, it was released in 2008, but I nominate “Don’t Wanna Be A Deatheater” by The Brothers Black for “Best Punk And Possibly Overall Wizard Rock Song I Didn’t Realize Existed in 2008”.

    Dear members of the Academy,

I hope that this year, you will do the right thing and recognize the following songs for their outstanding contribution to the wizard rock canon

Best Punk Song: “I Wanna Be A Professional Baseball Player” by the Giant Squidstravaganza/Crush the Crustaceans
Best Metawizardrock Song: “Wizard Rock Awards Acceptance Speech” by the Giant Squidstravaganza

Despite the fact that certain folks on the world wide web seem hellbent on nominating the same old names in every possible category, I offer my appeal to you, THE VOTER! Let us put a populist face on this year’s election! No more shall we answer to the beck and call of our wizard rock overlords! No more shall we cower in fear as they try and ram the same tired and hackneyed shtick down our beaks! It is time now to look within our hearts – all three of them – and do what is right! The architeuthis in this community have gone unrecognized for too long, but now we are able to change course. This year, we can finally chose our own destiny and offer true and right offerings to the god of the sea and the empress of space and time. Now is YOUR CHANCE to vote for the GIANT SQUIDSTRAVAGANZA for WIZARD ROCK!

This message has been brought to you by the Giant Squidstravaganza.

What year is RiddleTM’s “For Jo”? Cuz if that’s 2009, it wins best meta song, hands down.

  22. Art Avatar

“For Jo” was written in 2007 and released on Riddle TM’s January 2008 album Secrets of the Darkest Art. It won Best Metawizardrock Song of 2008 in last year’s awards.

Just to throw it out there, I think “Howler” by Lauren Fairweather and Hank Green fits the metawizard rock category…

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhh…. I just found out that after almost 2 years, Sunny Christian finally recorded her song “I’d Rather Be at Hogwarts” with the new band Alohomora and released it on an EP in late 2009.

TOTALLY could have been nominated for Best Metawizardrock Song. I really liked it the first time I heard it on her Youtube video back in feb 2008, but that demo version had an unplugged electric guitar as the only instrument… Now it’s recorded with full instrumentation and it’s FANTASTIC…
