Question…Everyday!

Here at the ‘pedia, we’re gearing up for the WRPCAs. Our nomination period will start soon, and we will have lots of information regarding that as it gets closer. For now, we’re going to start with a brainstorming period to help jog your memories of all the awesome wrock we heard in 2009.
Starting today, we are going to post a few categories every day, and we want you to help us remember what fits in that category from 2009. These first few categories are ones where we aren’t sure there are enough nominees to fill the category.

Best Metal/Hard Rock Song
Best Instrumental Song
Best Remixed Song

I know that Creevey Crisis’ VII is an amazing example of the first category, but as much as I love Russ, we don’t really want to have all 5 nominees be songs from his album.
As far as instrumental and remixed…I can’t remember anything for either one!
Help?

    What about Cruciatus Curse?

  2. Marauder Avatar

Dawlish and the Archies did a whole ton of remixes this year…

What exactly counts for instrumental? Does a member of the band have to be playing an actual physical instrument, or does electronic stuff count?

Either way, I/we (The First Task Is Dragons) released an instrumental song (piano) called “Winter In the Forbidden Forest” in 2009. Not saying it does or doesn’t deserve to be nominated, just giving an example to fill a possible spot.

As for metal/hard rock, I think “The Real Story of Aberforth’s Goat (Live In Hogsmeade)”, also by us, would count…not sure, you can click the link and listen to it on our player and see what you think.

Seriously not trying to be like, “oooooooh, weeeeeeeeee did one,” but I want all the categories to have enough songs to exist. 🙂

Do parodies (of other wizard rock bands’ songs or of muggle songs) and covers (of other wizard rock bands’ songs) count as remixed songs? Cause I can think of some of those.

  5. Art Avatar

Probably not, but what are your favorite covers and parodies of 2009?

I can’t think of many remixes from 2009, but one that I really liked was the (Potter Puppet Pals’) “Like Snape” remix by Severus and the Snapes.

Also, peeved sort of performed/remixed Hedwig’s Theme on his EP of the month release.

  6. Dawlish and the Archies Avatar

Well, we did a lot of wremixes, releasing an entire free album of them. We’ve remixed everything everything from Harry and the Potters to Split Seven Ways to Draco and the Malfoys to multi-band mashups, including a wremix of a wremix – “It’s Still Snowing”. Also, I don’t think that parodies and filks count as remixes, but I do believe that there should be a category for best filk in the WRPCAs this year.

Also, this probably doesn’t count, but Luna’s Ceiling did a fantastic remix of a song from Split Seven Ways’ muggle side-project.

Lastly, Most Frustrating Instrumental Song is definitely “Ollivander’s” by Diagon Alley – those who particpated in the Wrockstock Contest will know EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

  7. Freya Avatar

I thought ‘Ollivander’s’ came out in 2008? Or was it not actually released until 2009?

  8. Dawlish and the Archies Avatar

I really don’t know when Ollivander’s was released. BUT IT’S REALLY FRIGGING HARD TO IDENTIFY INSTRUMENTAL SONGS YOU’VE ONLY HEARD ONCE BEFORE, AT MOST. GHAHSJHDSHSAJSILA. Also, Prophets of Godric’s Hollow released an entirely instrumental free EP, some of them instrumentals for their songs, some of them songs that are just straight up instrumentals. You should all check it out, it’s pretty nifty.

Hmm would All Deatheaters Die by Switchblade Kittens count? It was on the From Beneath These Ashes album which came out in 2009

I can think of a bunch of instrumental songs from 2008. But not 2009…

There definitely needs to be a category for best parody! There are some amazing ones.

  11. Art Avatar

I would call “All Deatheaters Die” a punk song.

    Dear “friends,”

I would like to remind the voting public that my debut album, “Death to Humans” was actually released in 2009 even though it was part of the 2008 Wizard Club. I am excited that you will be able to vote for it in all categories this year.

Now, since you’ve asked, I’ll give you my recommendations for the three categories you’ve inquired about.

Best Metal/Hard Rock Song – The Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Crush the Crustaceans”
Best Instrumental Song – The Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Revolution #3 (Not in My Lake)”
Best Remixed Song – The Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Podcast Remix (by Peeved)”

As far as remixes go, what about the entire tribute album to Draco and the Malfoys? Like the very memorable “My Dad is Rich on a Boat” by Swish and Flick?

  14. Denni Towle Avatar

Shameless self promotion…a lil bit. Just throwing it out there in case people didn’t hear the songs or see us live…
The Cruciatus Curse’s Death Eaters With Attitude dropped in June and is up on iTunes it includes:

Entranced By Voldemort – Hard Rock/Metal & Wrock Cover
Death Eaters Lament – Softer hip-hop/rock
Death Eaters Anthem – Parody of DMX Ruff Ryders
Tale of the Deathly Hallows – Hip-Hop/Rap
and so on…just lettin y’all know what we did in case u forgot…

But on to my picks…I vote Swish & Flick My Dad Is Rich…my fav song of ’09, and to be honest i think Wrock Band of ’09!

  15. Russ Avatar

Thanks Freya, the check’s in the mail 😉

I don’t ever like talking up things like this, mostly because I always think there are other bands out there more deserving, and also because I feel weird whoring out Creevey. However, “VII” as an album was a total group effort for the first time since the band started, and I think CJ and Chris’ parts they wrote and played were some of the best in wrock and they deserve to get recognized for that. So I’ll gladly talk up “Nagini” for the Best Metal (and I think everyone who was at Wrockstock would agree) and also “Overture” for Best Instrumental as a tribute to those guys on the album (and also to the other awesome wrockers and musicians who helped too!).

  16. Scott Humdinger Avatar

Russ, I think “Overture” is just one of the best rock instrumentals I’ve ever heard. Period. Damn fine piece of music.

If covers count as remixes then “My Dad is Rich” by Swish and Flick (hilarious!), “Snape vs. Snape/The Bravest Man I Ever Knew” by The Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office (epic!), “This Book is so Awesome” by The Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office and “Fat Aunt Rising” by Dawlish and the Archies is a brilliant parody of The Curse Breakers’s “Full Moon,” if that counts.

Oh, and “Like Snape” (by Potter Puppet Pals)remixed by Severus and the Snapes is awesome!

(I’ve been going by iTunes release dates because MySpace is not time-frame-search-friendly, so I am forgetting definite awesome-ness.)
    Best Instrumental Song:
“Ssss Sss Ssss” by the Parselmouths
Does “The Veil” by Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office count? Most of the whispering is unintelligible.

    Best Remixed Song:
Second “Like Snape” by Severus and the Snapes, “My Dad is Rich” by Swish and Flick, “Snape vs. Snape/The Bravest Man I Ever Knew” by Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, “Fat Aunt Rising” by Dawlish and the Archies

Going to try to catch up here. Hmm, let’s see.
Best metal: Avada Kedavra by Muggle Death Campm (Awesome guitar riff. Take a listen, do you guys consider them metal?)
Best instrumental: Overture by Creevey Crisis (EFFING EPIC, I SAY!)
Best remixed: Snape like Snape by Severus and the Snapes (get’s in my head all the time.)
