Thanks to zivlok, who emailed in this week’s Question Tuesday idea!
Which characters need more songs or bands about them or from their point of view?
My favorite character happens to be Sirius Black, so I’m going to go with him. I know that there are some songs about him (‘Honorary Marauder’ by Tonks and the Aurors and ‘Young Sirius Black’s Flying Motorbike’ by The Remus Lupins, just to name two), but I can’t help wishing that Darius of The Hungarian Horntails had stuck with his idea of Sirius and the Blacks. The other Sirius-inspired bands don’t seem to be putting out any new music (some of them haven’t even logged on to their MySpaces in over a year!), and I can’t find any of them on iTunes. The Sirius Black Attack is promising a CD out soon, so perhaps I’ll get my wish then.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to everyone!

I’ve always thought The Sorting Hat could have some very interesting perspective. I’ve been fairly surprise no one has exploited that treasure trove of content yet.
-
I’ve always really liked Arthur Weasely, and how he’s sort of the foil to Lucius Malfoy, and vice-versa, and while there’s a couple songs about/from Molly (like Roonil Wazlib’s “Mollywobbles”) and there are plenty of songs about the Weaselys as a whole, I don’t think I ever come across a song about or from the POV of Arthur.
Also, the Knight Bus in general intrigues me, and there isn’t much out there about the bus, Stan Shunpike, or Ernie.
-
While there are definitely songs ABOUT him, and have mentioned him, I always wanted to hear a REALLY good band focused primarily on Snape…
or…. I don’t know… I want a band all about The Bloody Baron! 😛
-
Ohhhhh, Arthur Weasley and the Sorting Hat are both really good ones!
My plan is to wake up one morning, discover that I suddenly can play an instrument, sing and write songs. When this happens I’m gonna start a band called “The Professor McGonagalls” and sing about how awesome I am.
-
Soon you will all cower at the musical might of my new ultra-obscure WRock project: Anthony Goldstein and the Bit Players. 😉
-
How about a Ska band called Horrace and the SlugHorns? Although I think it would mostly be useful for the pun.
On a more Sirius note… I agree about Sirius.
I think that Hagrid seems about unexplored. Also, while I think that Dumbledore has been very well covered as a subject matter, very few (if any) wrockers have stepped in his shoes. A duo of Albus and Aberforth perhaps?
-
Neville. Granted he’s got some songs, and a few bands. But I want to see a in-your-face-I’m-A-BAMF-Neville-Longbottom band.
-
Hedwig. For sure.
-
I’ve heard songs about Luna, but would love to hear some from her very unique viewpoint. (If these exist already, let me know!)
AND the Dursleys hum-drum existence on Privet Drive was interrupted by book 7 and this could be an entire comic wrock opera from anyone’s viewpoint!
P.S. If some bands haven’t checked in for a year, maybe it’s time for a Wizrocklopedia community project to find out how they are doing?!
-
there are some Luna songs, even a few bands (Luna Wants a Longbottom, DJ Luna Lovegood, and The Luna lovegoods.) I think I’d like more Voldemort, because he is a really fun perspective. And Mr. ollivander.
-
A song from Peter Pettigrew about how he suffers post-traumatic stress whenever he hears a cat meow.
I think that would be hilarious.
-
I definitely agree about Sirius. There are some very good songs out there, like the ones you mentioned, or ‘The Ballad of Sirius Black’ by Marked as His Equal, but there could definitely be more.
Generally, I’d like to see more songs from various characters’ perspectives. Many characters have a wide variety of songs about them, but not that many really exploring their point of view. For instance, songs from the points of view of Dumbledore or Voldemort could be really interesting.
-
I think that we should look at Wizard Rock through a different sort of view for a bit with a band from the Dursley perspective. Think of the songs you could right. “Aunt Marge to the Moon”, “Why Didn’t I Just Leave Him On Our Doorstep?”, and “The Wrath of the Smelting Stick”.
Ooh. Sorry. too much caffeine. But these could be fun for a laugh. 🙂 -

I think the amount of songs/bands tends to be equal to the character’s exposure in the books. Sirius Black is a bit vague. Most of the non-mains are. There’s countless potential for different perspectives, but what about the appeal? A dozen people could have a dozen characters they want songs about, but would they agree on just one? Harry and the Potters just makes sense. Harry was witness to most everything, and the most opinionated. Then Draco and the Malfoys is a logical twist to that. But beyond them, you get a bit obscure singing about the perspective of a random character, and then you’re just doing it to do it. It doesn’t have the irony of Draco singing about the power of love.
It’s hard to come up with the perspective of a character you know little about. Sirius Black would have to be goth, because his whole life was miserable.
-
I don’t necessarily agree with that. I mean, Big Whompy took a freaking plant, for crying out loud, and gave it this incredible sense of character and voice!
Also, another good Luna band is Luna’s Ceiling.
And yes, besides HatP’s Dumbledore EP, I don’t know of any bands dedicated to Dumbledore. And there are only a handful of songs from his perspective. The only non-HatP one that jumps out in my mind is the incredible “I Watch You Slip Away” by Split Seven Ways. So, Dumbledore sounds like a great choice.
-
Luna’s Ceiling, is an awesome name. i will have to look them up.
Um….I think Lavender Brown might be fun to hear from, ready for the HBP release.
-
There’s also Siriusly Black, who has a few songs on MySpace!
And I agree–“Luna’s Ceiling” is a wonderful name!
-
I have to admit I think it would be cool to hear some things from Blaise Zambini’s perspective.
-
Snape. He deserves our attention. His chivalric love of Lily–his loyalty to DD….an apology from Harry?
-
@Russ: YES! Cyclops wizard rock!
I also think the appeal of wizard rock for me is actually more for the minor characters. I’m interested in hearing what people think about their point of view, and I feel like it’s some sort of “bonus material”.
-
I did a song about the Sorting Hat, it’s called The Sorting on my MySpace.
But well, I suck and it’s an acapella song since I could’t play to save my life…I can’t get enough of Severus Snape’s song, but that’s just cause I’m obsessed.
No I’d like to see songs about Lavender&Parvati, I think they are more to them than just gossip, Parvati did die in the final battle fighting for what was right!
-
@Freya, I know what you mean about the minor characters. I’m always glad when I find a good fan-fiction that is centered around one of them… and it’s even better with music :p
-
I really want to hear some songs about Hagrid because there’s not many out there. Also maybe some about the Hogwarts ghosts. They might have some interesting stories to tell us!
-
Fudge.
-
I call Jarrod’s Fudge and raise a Dawlish
-
I’ll see your Dawlish and raise you a Nigel.
Think about it – the possibilities are nearly endless!
“Another Delivery for you Mr Weasley”
“I Can’t Complain About What’s Missing From The Movies Cuz I’m Not In The Books”
“I’m All Right, I’m All Right”
“I Hope Colin Dies Instead Of Me In Movie 7.5”
“How Come I’m Not In The Video Game?”
“How Come I’m Not In The Video Game Part II?”

Just reading the titles made me laugh, I sooo have to check it out :p

I think a band from the point of view of movie!Neville could be along the same lines.
“I Like Hanging From Skeletons”
“Who’s Dobby?”
“In Which I Start Dealing Gillyweed”
“In Which I Find The Room of Requirement”
“In Which I Follow Draco Around During 6th Year For Harry Potter”
“In Which Bellatrix Stabs Me… Wait, What?”Also, Camie, I would be remiss if I did not link the following bands:

IFTBA: Thanks for the vote of confidence. 🙂
I’ve written four full-length albums and an EP now as The Whomping Willows. All it requires is a little creativity and a willingness to really explore the depths of the characters and their function in the narrative. In my opinion, the bands who write from the perspectives of main characters would be more susceptible to “doing it just to do it,” because you really could potentially write a few thousand songs from Harry’s perspective or Ron’s perspective and so forth, but you’d be writing songs like “I Just Brushed My Teeth” and “I Enjoy Getting A Good Night’s Sleep.” Thankfully, wizard rockers tend to be creative, funny, clever and hard-working, so we don’t have to worry about that sort of thing.
Russ: I totally kicked Davey Gudgeon’s ass! No band for him! 😀
-
Russ I raise you the kid from the 3rd movie who disappeared.
“Like Smoke Between Fingers”
come on.. that’s just sweet.
-
Camie, you took the words right out of my mouth. I would buy that band’s album without hesitation.

Singing about Whompy or Myrtle is a lot easier than singing about a random human character though. There’s humor in those ideas, not so much the characters that are little more than a name of somebody Jo knew in school. I think it’s a case of being inspired BY a character rather than making an effort to pick a random character and find the value in their perspective. Yes, you could potentially write about anyone who has even the most minor role, but the desire has to be there in the musician first.
There’s an endless supply of famous witches and wizards with more depth than most of the students in the books. But you’d have to be an odd person to focus on an obscure fictional trading card description and not characters like Dobby or Buckbeak.
I intend to write at least one song about every character before quitting, because that appeals to me more than being stuck with a single character.
It’s not like anybody’s lacking for ideas. It’s just that people’s ideas tend not to revolve around secondary, minor or obscure characters. While someone MIGHT say, “I can’t make a band about Olivander,” it’s more likely that they just thought of something else instead.

I love Ron, but I never came across songs about him other than Roonil Wazlib. Any ideas?
And I love the idea of a Argus Filch.
